Selection of the Taylor-Saffman bubble does not require surface tension.

چکیده
A new general class of exact solutions is presented for the time evolution of a bubble of arbitrary initial shape in a Hele-Shaw cell when surface tension effects are neglected. These solutions are obtained by conformal mapping the viscous flow domain to an annulus in an auxiliary complex plane. It is then demonstrated that the only stable fixed point (attractor) of the nonsingular bubble dynamics corresponds precisely to the selected pattern. This thus shows that, contrary to the established theory, bubble selection in a Hele-Shaw cell does not require surface tension. The solutions reported here significantly extend previous results for a simply connected geometry (finger) to a doubly connected one (bubble). We conjecture that the same selection rule without surface tension holds for Hele-Shaw flows of arbitrary connectivity.

We studied the growth of viscous fingers as a Laplacian growth by conformal mapping. Viscous fingers grow due to Saffman-Taylor instability in the interface between two fluids, when a less viscous fluid pushes a more viscous fluid. As there was an interest in the rectangular Hele-Shaw cell, we solved the Laplacian equation with appropriate boundary conditions by means of conformal mapping tech...
متن کاملHele–Shaw flow and pattern formation in a time-dependent gap
We consider flow in a Hele–Shaw cell for which the upper plate is being lifted uniformly at a specified rate. This lifting puts the fluid under a lateral straining flow, sucking in the interface and causing it to buckle. The resulting short-lived patterns can resemble a network of connections with triple junctions. The basic instability—a variant of the Saffman–Taylor instability—is found in a ...
متن کاملSelection of the Saffman-Taylor Finger Width in the Absence of Surface Tension: an Exact Result
We solve the Saffman-Taylor finger selection problem in the absence of surface tension by showing that an arbitrary interface in a Hele-Shaw cell evolves to a single uniformly advancing finger occupying one half of the channel width. This result contradicts all previous work in this field and the generally accepted belief that surface tension is indispensable for the selection of the 1 2 -width...
متن کاملViscous fingering as a paradigm of interfacial pattern formation: recent results and new challenges.
We review recent results on dynamical aspects of viscous fingering. The Saffman-Taylor instability is studied beyond linear stability analysis by means of a weakly nonlinear analysis and the exact determination of the subcritical branch. A series of contributions pursuing the idea of a dynamical solvability scenario associated to surface tension in analogy with the traditional selection theory ...
متن کاملSaffman-Taylor fingers with kinetic undercooling.
The mathematical model of a steadily propagating Saffman-Taylor finger in a Hele-Shaw channel has applications to two-dimensional interacting streamer discharges which are aligned in a periodic array. In the streamer context, the relevant regularization on the interface is not provided by surface tension but instead has been postulated to involve a mechanism equivalent to kinetic undercooling, ...
